Here is my solution to the silly spare wheel location.- 07/2012 Extreme
I have rotated the frame 90 degrees and it now hinges at the top and is assisted with 2 gas struts.
A bit of cutting and welding and re positioning the existing latches, but all has been great over 2
Gibb Road passes, Connie Sue and elsewhere. Will give more details with pics. I also place 4 jerry cans
in the rear holders for the BIG trips and have seen no signs of the reported cracking- Rawlina to Cocklebiddy 130km , 7 hours very rough.

Anyone who is interested, I can provide some specific dimensions and strut ratings.
It is not wise to make the tyre higher or it will contact the awning. I have changed my spare to steel rim that is compatable with my MUX and it will fit the camper- slight offset difference. The relocated hinges have re enforcing plates at the back.
My first mod to the wheel carrier was to replace the bolts in the hinges with just a pin and clip and I took the wheel off when camped up. I did also consider modifiing the hinge to allow the carrier to open a further 90 degrees, but I am now glad I spent the extra time for this mod- yes the C of G is bad with the tyre up there but just take care.
